This year our national holiday occurs on Friday, July 4, 2025. Join fellow citizens at 9:00 A.M. on the grounds of Portsmouth Free Public Library to read aloud portions of our nation’s founding document, the Declaration of Independence, adopted unanimously by a fledgling Congress 249 years ago on July 4, 1776. Copies will be available or bring your own.

Most of us have read Longfellow’s poem in our early years and assumed it was historically accurate. Not so. Longfellow wrote the poem 85 years after Paul Revere made his famous ride April 18-19, 1775. This talk will examine the historical inaccuracies of the poem and try to explain Longfellow’s mistakes. It will then address the Battle of Lexington and Concord and the significance of the “shot heard round the world.”
Teens in grades 6-12 are invited to join us for a pantry basics program, based around putting together a meal that includes protein, fat, carbs, and veggies. Participants will learn about locally sourced food and pairings for a great tasting meal that is nutritionally balanced. If anyone has allergies, we need to know prior to the program, as we cannot guarantee Farm Fresh RI will be able to accommodate. Registration is required - space is limited!
Make it vintage! Teens in grades 6-12 are invited to the library to re-design or embellish a pair of jean shorts you bring from home. Karen Katin, owner of The Stitchery, will be on hand to lead participants through the process.
Sorry! This program is now full.
The Portsmouth Garden Club and the Library have joined forces to offer a lovely selection of vegetables, houseplants, perennials, and more!
Enjoy a treat from our baked sale, too.
This fundraiser will benefit both organizations. Cash only, please.
Rain or shine.
