"The Journey Begins" with Local Author Cynthia Elder

The Journey Begins by local author Cynthia Elder is an historical novel set in West Barnstable in 1830 and carries through the Great Age of Sail and the Civil War years.  Seen through the eyes of lighthouse keeper Joseph Nickerson and members of the Jenkins and Fish families whose livelihoods are tied to the sea, the story follows young James Jenkins as he travels the world as a sailor.  Separated for years from his family, James binds himself to them through letters that span the vastness of oceans and time.  The characters’ words are captured from ship’s logs, letters, and personal journals and form the basis of the fascinating glimpse of the seafaring lives of the families.

Author Cynthia Elder will discuss her research and her writing process.  Books will be available for purchase and signing.
