Book a Librarian

Have you ever felt that you needed some extra help doing your homework, research paper or using the computer?  Never fear...your Librarian is here!  We have the necessary resources and skills to help you out.  This free service is available for individualized help.  Please feel free to contact the reference staff with the subject matter and make an appointment to meet with a librarian for a 30 minute session.  The staff member will help you get a good start on your assignment, project, or new computer skill.  We can even order materials for you via interlibrary loan (valid Ocean State Libraries card required for ILL items).  This service is not available on Sundays.

Library Association Board Meetings

The Library Board of Trustees is the governing body of the Portsmouth Free Public Library. Meetings are held in accordance with the R. I. Open Meetings Law (S 242 Sub B) and the public is invited to attend.

Library Board meetings are usually held at 7 PM on the first Monday of the month unless otherwise noted and are held in the Mello Program Room. The 2017 schedule of Library Board meetings follows:

January 9                 July - No meeting

Book Nook

The Book Nook is a small ongoing book sale that is staffed by volunteers and is open during regular library hours.  A variety of adult fiction & non-fiction titles are available along with some children's books.  The stock is always changing so visit often.  The proceeds from this book sale help fund library services.

If you wish to donate books for this sale, please feel free to put books in good condition in the plastic bins near the door to the Book Nook.  Please do not drop off encyclopedias, textbooks or magazines.

    Who can get a card?
This Library is partially funded by local property taxes and state aid in the form of a grant. If you live in or own real estate in the Rhode Island, your taxes help support the library and a card will be issued at no charge. In order to borrow materials from the Library, users must register for a borrower card. Cards which are free of fines and have not been used for a period of three years will be purged from the database.

            Patron Types:
    • Adult:  Patrons aged 18 or older.
    • Juvenile:  Patrons under the age of 18. A parental signature is required to obtain a library card. A parental signature is also required to have DVD, video and video game borrowing privileges.
    • Non-Resident:  Non-residents who work in RI or college students may obtain a library card but must present a photo ID printed with their permanent address.  Non-residents who work in RI must also show a current paystub of a RI employer.  These cards must be renewed annually and are issued with a local use only limitation (to be used at the issuing library only - no holds allowed on other library's materials) . College students must show a college ID as well as one with their permanent address.  Portsmouth property owners who are non-residents must show a current tax bill.

    Interlibrary Loan

    INTERLIBRARY LOAN POLICY
Portsmouth Free Public Library does not always own the item you would like to check out.  When we don't own an item, we'll do our best to get what you need by purchasing the item for the Library or borrowing it from another library.  Interlibrary loan is the process through which library materials, or a copy of the material, are made available by one library to another upon request.
Library users may request that the Library attempt to locate and borrow for their use a specific item which is not available in our Library currently. We do not charge for interlibrary loan within the Ocean State Library consortium, however, if an item is borrowed from out of state, there is a $2.00 fee upon receipt of the item to help us cover return mailing costs.  There may also be a photocopy fee for lengthy articles. If there will be a charge, patrons will be notified before the material is ordered. This will allow them to decide whether they still want the material.
